Death Notes[ 3] Doc: TFC's death Doc
[ 4] Kerriariadne: on TFC (a bit long) Anyway, I wanted to put up a couple thoughts on the online pc average, and why it may indeed drop over the next few months. It would weigh pretty heavily on me if TFC went away due to low averages. a) I do think some players will leave. Those who just can't tolerate their perceived "weakened" state, and those who just don't agree with Tynian's vision for TFC, will (should?) take their leave. On the other hand, this departure could very likely result in greater happiness among players who *do* stay. And this, in turn, could attract more players. b) A good amount of our players are students - high school, college, graduate, and others. Typically, these next few months will consist of holiday breaks, exams, major projects, term papers, and multitudes of other work coming due. These things will, naturally, detract from peoples' available time. Again, the averages we see over the next few months will perhaps be skewed under these circumstances. c) I am quite sure the numbers don't lie: over a 24-hour period, an average of 16 to 20 (or higher or lower) is on the money. However, this may not be a fair representation of interest in TFC. As has been pointed out, most (85% maybe?) of the player base is from the United States. Peak hours for playing are probably 6:00 a.m. through midnight by west coast clocks -- with bulges in online activity occurring here and there while people get breaks in between classes, get off work/get home from work, destress during lunch, etc. To include the hours while the bulk of the d) I can't speak for anyone but myself here: The Winter Olympics will divert my attention -- not a lot, but I do enjoy the Olympics and will be paying some homage to the Games. So during those weeks, I'll be more or less "scarce" (relatively speaking). I doubt I will be alone in this. So if the numbers do decline, I wager it is to be expected, but I am not of the opinion that this is an accurate long-term indicator. On the other hand, if it is deemed necessary that TFC be laid to rest, so be it. I do hope that such an event would be based on other reasons, what-ever those may be. Thank you all for your time. Kerriariadne Bala'Bandienne, Lord of the Dark [ 4] Alaric: A note of support IMHO, those who are griping the loudest about the changes are probably playing for the wrong reason, or at least too limited a reason. But if they decide to pack up and quit, I say, "Don't let the door hit you on the way out." Props to Tynian and let's keep TFC going! Alaric [ 5] Tynian: Re: TFC's demise I don't think TFC's death is imminent. I posted the number because of inquiries. I was not trying to alarm anyone. I'm fairly confident activity will not drop below 18.5 for two consecutive months in the near future. I am motivated by you, the players. When people are happy and playing, and things are going well, I am much more likely to stay interested in making changes to TFC. When things are at their worst, it is very difficult for me to get motivated to spend time with the code. In the back of my mind, I am thinking "Why bother? No one is playing, anyway." I meant it when I thanked those of you that are reserving judgment until I've completed this batch of changes. Now is not an especially good time for me to become distracted. Earlier this year, we dropped to the high 15's in player averages. I vowed at that time that TFC was not going back there again. As for the averages: Yes, they are 24-hour averages. Player activity for this year, and the pervious years, is available at: http://mud.primenet.com/tfc/stats/index.html Tynian. Click here to return to timeline |
